HOW
TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY
TRYING
This
year's musical is How
to Succeed in Business Without Really
Trying. With music and lyrics
by Frank Loesser and book by Abe Burrows,
Jack Weinstock, and Willie Gilbert,
the show is based on Shepherd Mead's
1952 book of the same name.
The
musical opened at the 46th Street
Theatre on Broadway in October 1961,
running for 1,417 performances. The
show won seven Tony Awards, the New
York Drama Critics Circle award, and
the 1962 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
In 1967, a film based on the musical
was released by United Artists, with
many of the original cast recreating
their roles. A 1995 revival was mounted
at the same theatre as the original
production (now named the Richard
Rodgers Theatre) ran for 548 performances
and starred Matthew Broderick and
Megan Mullally. A 50th anniversary
Broadway revival directed and choreographed
by Rob Ashford and starring Daniel
Radcliffe and John Larroquette opened
on March 27, 2011, at the Al Hirschfeld
Theatre.
David
Bahgat, UAHS class of 2004,
will again be our guest stage director.
David is fresh off of a tour of Jesus
Christ Superstar and really felt
a lot of personal growth when he stage
directed Millie. We are fortunate
to have such a talented alumni who
is willing to share his experiences
and give back to his community as
he helps all of us continue to grow.
ARTICLE
IN UA THIS WEEK: HOW TO SUCCEED IN
BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING
From
UA This Week, January 25, 2012:
With
next months production of How
To Succeed in Business Without Really
Trying, a number of production
roles have been filled by former students,
working to share their experiences
with this years class.
Februarys
production will feature directing
by David Bahgat (04),
set design by Keith Schnacke (07),
sound design and engineering by Mike
Freeze (08), and lighting
design by Anthony Aleshire
(08).
Its
a pretty cool thing that, from the
technical side, these guys have learned
and decided to make that their vocations,
but they all started in our productions,
said Eric Kauffman, UAHS vocal music
director. When they were students
here they all did dual duty. If they
werent in a scene, they were
doing something backstage, or in here
on weekends working to get the musicals
ready.
Bahgat,
who is now acting in New York City,
said this years production satirizes
the way men and women interact in
the office.
Its
a commentary on the business world,
and it definitely is a satire on the
workplace and what womens roles
there are, he said. It
pokes fun at CEOs and corporate execs,
asking if they, or anyone, really
ever knows what theyre doing
in their jobs.
In
this piece, we really decided from
the beginning that women are the brains
behind the workplace, that really,
the job cant be done without
them, and we play with that.
Performances
of How to Succeed in Business Without
Really Trying will be on February
23, 24, 25 and 26. Tickets
are on sale now.
